Hello fellow human,
Here is a list of things from January I felt like sharing with you:
10 things from January
I am inspired by the idea of viewing my notebooks as Idea Gardens thanks to
sharing Mo Willems’ notebook practice.“Inside these gardens are the seeds of ideas, their un-pruned wildness, the weeds, some fertilizer, and the first blooms of every book, opera, work of theater, or TV. Here’s a peek at a decade’s worth of seeds. Plant ‘em, tend them, they will bear fruit.” — Mo Willems
I added two new pocket notebooks to my notebook lineup. They’re both A6 Leuchtturm 1917 softcover pocket notebooks - one is for sketching, the other for collecting inspiring things. The former is pretty self explanatory - basically, I wanted to be able to draw on the go and hope that the smaller page will encourage me to draw more frequently. The latter, my little book of inspiring things, is exactly that - a place to collect other people’s inspiring ideas and sayings. Whether it’s a friend, a famous writer, or something I read in a book, this is the home of inspiring ideas for my to reflect on and live by. When I’m bored or feeling a bit low, I see myself flicking through the pages as a pick-me-up - an idea inspired by Park Notes.
I wore this Ben Abraham merch t-shirt a lot. I think it says it all, really.
I discovered my local library loans audiobooks for free via an app called BorrowBox. I read non-fiction books in hard copy because I like to annotate and take notes. I would like to read more fiction, but don’t want to clutter my space with hard copies and don’t take notes, so I’m experimenting with listening to audiobooks. It’s only been a week but I have loved being able to put the audiobook on during the minutes of the day where I’m getting changed, doing physical admin tasks around the house or getting ready for bed.
I haven’t stopped thinking about this quote since I stumbled upon it:
“Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest grief is just love with no place to go.” — Jamie Anderson
I’ve been reading a lot more thanks to my current interest in digital minimalism. But I still struggle to remember books exist and focus on reading. So I reflected on the systems and containers I personally need in order to enjoy more books. One of these things was keeping a very simple log of how many pages I read a day and of what. So I added a section to the bottom of my journal that records this - number of pages, title, author, when I started, when I finished, and a picture of the book cover. At its core it’s a habit tracker.
