Howdy fellow human!
This week’s notes:
1.
Alice Herbst on making art “to make my past beautiful”.
“It all boils down to my history of trying out identities when I was younger and realising that no matter how much I would try to adapt to different people and surroundings I would always feel like I was playing charades or trying to be someone that I wasn’t. In the end, not really knowing who I was - the authentic self. And as I’m growing older I realise that I don’t need to define myself. That can be the defining thing for me, and that is completely okay. That is who I am.”
2.
I got myself a date stamp for my notebooks (as inspired by the ever-inspiring
). The sound it makes is very satisfying!3.
This video interview with 93-year old artist Dorothea Rockburne in her New York studio. Her loft is extraordinary, a work of art in itself, and I am forever inspired by life-long female artists.
“I hope to be an inspiration to other women. I hope then my life will allow them to also be artists. I want them to know that they can do it too. Just stick to it.”
“When I work I don’t think. I think before I work, and I think after I work. While I’m working I’m not thinking, I’m doing.”
“It [art] makes me feel like my life is part of the Universe.”
4.
I have to do something repetitive with my hands whilst I watch TV or movies to self-regulate. As I am not a knitter or a sewer or a crocheter I have decided to follow in my granny’s footsteps and become a jigsaw puzzler! I’ve just ordered this one as my next challenge.
5.
The Eight Mountains is a story of friendship and self-discovery set over four decades in the Italian Alps. Aside from being a beautifully told epic, the cinematography made me yelp with excitement at every shot!
6.
Notes on a walk - 26th February
"The creative journey is like going on a walk with no destination. You come to a fork in the road and choose a direction. You come to a hill and climb it to see what’s on the other side.”

8.
I’m slowly making my way through Sluggish, a thought-provoking newsletter about ‘disability and deviance’ by
. Jesse’s work encourages me to think critically, especially around my current interests in technology and neurodiversity.9.
This episode of Soul Salon by
:“In the current paradigm, we must either BE confident, or fake it. There is no room for un-confidence in white supremacy, patriarchy, hierarchy — and I feel called to turn this on its head. What if there is more wisdom in a lack of confidence in a lack of Knowing than there is within Knowing itself?”
10.
A friend generously gifted me The Botanist’s Sticker Anthology for my birthday. It contains hundreds of stickers I can use in my journal and notebooks. I think I will also refer to them when drawing. I now have my eye on the others in the series!
11.
I could listen to John Dufresne talking about how to write a story on repeat.
“You write about what you don’t understand. What you don’t know is better than what you know ‘cause that’s what engages your sense of wonder. You sit and you insist on meaning but not on answers. The point is not to answer but to question, not to solve but to seek, not to preach, but to explore.”
If you have any questions for me for our February Q&A, let me know here.
Sending you love until next time!
