I really needed to read this, thank you so much for writing it. Rest is something I haven't 'studied' or looked into much before, but I have come to learn as I've gotten older that if I don't rest exactly when my body or mind is telling me I have to, I will absolutely start to down spiral. I've realized that if I take some time for me, even though it feels selfish and unproductive in the moment, it leads to a much quicker period of downtime and a rejuvenation to come out of it. But that's after many many years of breakdowns and burnout. I also love that you mentioned Nicola's Instagram, I love her page! Thanks again for this thoughtful post, and I hope you're getting the rest you need. Xx

Thank you for sharing, Hunter. There is such a lot of de-programming that goes with learning to tap into and appreciate rest when our body and mind are sending us signals that we need it, isn't there? I certainly feel it is a long process of realisation. After so many years of pushing through, I almost see it as a radical act of self-love and self-appreciation to allow the space to be restful without explanation or judgment - something that is so much easier said than done! ❤️

Very interesting classification. Although I did not use these terms, without sensory and social rest I would not be well!

Absolutely, so vital for me too! Can't believe how many years I went without nearly enough of either.

Thank you so much for writing this and including these steps. I also found your YouTube video on this to be both relatable and practical as things I can/should put into practice. Ive never known how to “relax” very well, let alone rest. Thank you for sharing your journey with others.

Full disclosure: I’m binging your content at 5 am because I couldn’t sleep (which is hilarious to say on a post about rest!)... I’m definitely going to be coming back to this post to write out ways I can rest in each category and do the journal questions. LOVE your thoughts- it’s really what I need right now! ❤️❤️

Aw yay I’m so glad!! I used to write a ton, and I know of the mental work (and care) that goes into it- I’ve really appreciated your perspective- it’s really what I’ve needed right now! ❤️ Seriously, it’s so weird to have doctors not know what to say to help... Looks like we need to help each other!

Charlie I have come across you via someone else’s comment in their post & how very very ‘now’ it is as I lay here dealing with EVERY CONCEIVABLE SYMPTOM of the spicy cough that seems to have got a complete hold of me, my body AND my nervous system.

This year has been my year of s.l.o.w.i.n.g down & yet I find my body telling me it needs even MORE rest.

This has given me much needed food for thought & a reassurance that I’m not an idiot for not getting rest ‘right’!!!

Thank you 🙏🏻

Dear Charlie

"Rest is a verb. It is a doing thing. It requires action to get results. It doesn’t just happen to me. I have to carve out the time and space in intentional ways to truly rest my body, mind, and soul."

What wisdom in these revelations.

Thank you for researching and sharing with us.

With profound gratitude,

Rodrigo

Oh Rina this made me smile! 🤗 I feel this is such a wonderful example of how rest looks different for all of us, and how we rest can change over time depending on our needs that day. I'm so happy that you figured out what you needed in that moment and found joy in rest. Also, funnily enough, it's almost as if you're describing my Tuesday this week - I, too, was struggling to rest inside but didn't have the energy to go 'out out' so I weeded my garden for the first time in a year and read my book in the sun in between weeding-sprees! It was exactly what I needed to lift my mood and sleep well. Thank you for sharing. ❤️
